The Essential Skills in Instruction Conference presented by Skill Plan will be held on Wednesday, October 28th and Thursday, October 29th 2009, at the Delta Ottawa Hotel. Both days of the conference feature a keynote speaker as well as a number of breakout sessions.
Brian Stettner, Western Canada Regional Coordinator (CSTEC), will be discussing how the classroom and the instructor have become part of today's steel mill as they integrate technology at a faster rate than ever before. The workforce is changing as baby boomers retire. Training centres across Canada are preparing new students and future employees to tackle these challenges, but what about those individuals already in the workforce, the ones that still have 20 or 30 years to work? Essential Skills training assists workers who lack the basic skill sets to complete formal training such as apprenticeship or certification programs. Effective ES training is critical for the workforce to meet chronic shortages for skilled workers. Many workplaces are meeting these challenges of training and skill development while reinforcing the need for investment in life-long learning. Colleges such as the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology are working with the Canadian Steel Trade and Employment Congress, United Steel Workers and Evraz Inc. North America to renew and upgrade the skills required to remain competitive.
