On Thursday, March 26, 2009, Sault College and the Algoma Workforce Investment Committee (AWIC) will be presenting recently developed instructional and participant materials, which will be used to deliver "Orientation to Apprenticeship Trades" Workshops in Northern Ontario.
These informative workshops will provide insights into apprenticeship in general and when possible, provide various experiences and exercises reflective of specific trade-related tasks (i.e. interpret simple blueprints, solder a simple circuit etc.) The use of the materials and resources will be flexible and allow for educational initiatives ranging from short, generalized three-hour workshops to more trade focused, participatory experiences lasting a full week.
The initial focus will be to promote the Skilled/Apprenticeship Trades to Northern Ontario First Nations but workshops will also be held with off-reserve groups as well.
Modules have been developed for the following trades: General Carpenter, Brick & Stone Mason, Construction Craft Worker, Plumber & Steamfitter, Construction & Maintenance Electrician and Industrial Electrician, Ironworker, Welder, Industrial Maintenance Mechanic, Industrial Instrumentation Mechanic, Automotive Service Technician, Truck Coach Technician & Heavy Duty Equipment Technician, Marine & Small Engine Mechanic, Hairstylist and Cook & Cook Assistant.
